While our collection’s main emphasis is Freeborn County history, any historical and genealogical research can be conducted in our library. The Freeborn County Genealogical Society’s library collection is also housed in the museum library.

Researchers and history enthusiasts spend hours, sometimes days, looking through microfilm and other resources tracing family history or other historical subjects in our extensive research library. While our collection’s main emphasis is Freeborn County history, any historical and genealogical research can be conducted in our library. 

What to Expect

Because of the nature of the Freeborn County Historical Museum materials, certain registration procedures and regulations apply to keep our collection safe and available for future use. Here are a few things you should expect when arriving at FCHM to do research:

Hours

The Research Library is open Wednesday through Friday - 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and the 2nd Saturday - 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The Library is closed from 1:00 to 1:30 PM daily.

Fees

Research access is free for FCHM members  and genealogical society members and $7.50 for non-members. If you are planning a visit, please call ahead (507-373-8003) and make an appointment so that we can best serve you.  Research is $20 per hour.

Library copies, 30 cents per copy; library photos on plain paper, $1 per image; library photos digital image, minimum quality, $5 per image; library photos digital image, medium quality, $12.50 per image.  Images for commercial use, please call for pricing.

Registration

On your first visit to the Research Library, you will be asked to fill out a registration card. Please bring a driver’s license or other form of photo identification. You may be asked to update your registration information each year. Members do not need to complete the registration.

Personal Belongings

Pencils, laptop computers, digital cameras, and loose papers may be brought into the Research LIbrary.  A coat rack is available for all of your other belongings. Computers, pencils and paper are provided for use.
